Sympathy is not considered as an option to a person who commits a heinous and undesirable act. The acts of murder as committed by characters such as Bigger in Richard Wright’s Native Son and Guitar in Toni Morrison’s Song of Solomon are first seen as immoral, evil, and irrational. However, as the books progress and characters express the rationale behind the deaths and crimes committed, the reader develops an understanding, if not sympathizes, with the logic and motives behind committing the distinguished crime. Bigger, the main character in Native Son, commits a crime by accidentally killing the rich white girl he worked for. Although the murder is initially an accident, Bigger convinces himself that the murder was not an accident and that he meant to kill Mary. The concept seems illogical, inhumane, and irrational to the reader at first; however, the third person limited point of view provides perspective on Bigger’s reactions and emotions as an African-American male in Jim Crow America. Guitar, Milkman’s best friend in Song of Solomon, kills deliberately. However, his kind and loving nature towards people earns his sympathy. He disproves the stereotype of savagery amongst black people by providing counsel and affection towards characters in the book. A Literary Analysis of â€Å"Problems with Hurricanes† This poem was written by Victor Hernandez Cruz. â€Å"Victor Hernà ¡ndez Cruz was born on February 6, 1949, in Aguas Buenas, Puerto Rico. He moved with his family to New Yorks Spanish Harlem at the age of five.† (Kannelos) He moved to America in 1954 and began writing in 1964, when he was 15. He published his first collection of poetry in 1969, at the age of 20.Victor Hernandez Cruzs poem â€Å"Problems with Hurricanes† is a poem addressing dark problems in a lighthearted and humorous way. â€Å"Problems with Hurricanes† is part of Cruzs collection of poems titled Maraca: New and Selected Poems.
